Why Avoiding Bisphenol A Can Be Beneficial For Your Health?

Bishpenol-A (BPA) is a man made chemical that is used in many plastic products such as food containers, water bottles and so on. It is used to soften the plastic, and basically you can expect most of the soft plastic you find to contain it. It is widely used in all kinds of products, even though there are some medical studies that have shown it might have a negative effect on our health.

In some of the studies a long term exposure could cause everything from decreased fertility to cancer,  even with small doses that lasted for a long period of time. Generally getting a small dose for a few weeks wasn’t enough, but when you kept on being exposed to this chemical for months and years, the effects would buil up.

When you think about the type of products that might contain BPA, you will realize the problem. Foor containers are one thing, but also all kinds of sports bottles, soda bottles and water bottles. We use these products all the time, and because of that the exposure can be on going. Not all soft plastic contains BPA and for that you don’t necessarily have to avoid all of them, but the problem is that there isn’t a sure way to tell if one contains or doesn’t. The numberings at the bottom of the bottle don’t tell you if it contains BPA or not.

When you heat foods in these containers, or drink hot liquids from these bottles or cups, the risks of the BPA dissolving in your liquid increase. This is one of the biggest reasons why products such as BPA free loose leaf tea travel mugs have a market these days. Before this chemical gest banned completely, these products will be used by health conscious people only. There is a big chance that it might never be banned, even though the studies are quite clear on its effects. Most of the production lines have been designed to work with this type of plastic, and it would cost a lot of money to all of the companies involved in production of plastic, to change this.

Before BPA is banned, we only have one thing to do – vote with our wallets. When you only buy products that do not contain BPA, you only support companies that make products that don’t contain BPA. When you do this, they thrive, and the other companies don’t.
